Early Life and Introduction to Music
Hiromi Uehara, known professionally as Hiromi, was born on March 26, 1979, in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan. She began her journey with music at the tender age of six when she started playing the piano. Her talent was evident from a young age, and by the time she was eight, she was introduced to jazz by her piano teacher, Noriko Hikida.
Education and Early Career
Hiromi’s passion for music led her to the Yamaha School of Music where she honed her skills and deepened her understanding of jazz. Her talent was recognized early on, and at the age of 14, she had the opportunity to perform with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. At 17, she had a chance encounter with Chick Corea in Tokyo, who invited her to perform with him at his concert the next day.
Berklee College of Music and Beyond
In 1999, Hiromi moved to Boston to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Here, she was mentored by Ahmad Jamal and had already signed with the jazz label Telarc before her graduation. Her debut album, “Another Mind,” was released in 2003, marking the beginning of a successful career in music.
The Trio Project and Success
Hiromi’s career took a significant turn in 2011 when she formed the Trio Project with contrabass guitarist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips. The Trio Project released several albums, including “Voice” (2011), “Move” (2012), “Alive” (2014), and “Spark” (2016). “Spark” reached the number one position on the US Billboard Jazz Albums chart for the week of April 23, 2016.
Recognition and Performances
Hiromi’s energetic performances and virtuosic technique have earned her worldwide recognition. She has performed at numerous festivals and events worldwide. In 2021, she performed at the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and in 2023, she performed a Tiny Desk Concert.
Personal Life
Away from the limelight, Hiromi leads a private life. She married Japanese fashion designer Mihara Yasuhiro in 2007. They met after she performed at one of his fashion shows in Milan the year before.
