If It Is Worth Doing Once…

When the original Volume 1, 5th edition of the Real Book came out in the early to mid 70’s, it was immediately embraced by most all gigging and learning jazz musicians as an indispensable, must have resource to have in your possession.

The demand for more charts, and tunes

Sometime in the 1980’s a RealBook Volume 2 emerged.

After all, Jazz sheet music was really nowhere to be found.

And multi page sheet music was not nearly as practical as having one page lead sheets.

The lead sheet format was so much closer to the jazz philosophy of improvisation, abstraction and interpretation.

Jazz musicians generally treat the composition as the starting point, and so they might alter the melody notes, the timing of the notes, or the chords.

Sometime in the 1980’s a RealBook Volume 2 emerged.

And look at this list of extraordinary artists and composers represented in Volume 2…
